Beneath the Quiet Peak
Date
2025
Location
Mt Fuji
At the northern base of Mount Fuji, the small town of Kawaguchiko rests quietly along the shores of Lake Kawaguchi. By dawn, the station platforms begin to hum as trains arrive from Tokyo and neighboring regions, delivering visitors eager for postcard views of Japan’s most iconic peak. Streets fill with camera shutters, café chatter, and the gentle rhythm of sightseeing boats tracing the lake’s edge.
But Kawaguchiko holds two distinct personalities. As afternoon light softens and day-trippers board their return trains, the town exhales. Shop shutters lower, sidewalks empty, and a deep stillness settles beneath Fuji’s silhouette. In the evenings, reflections stretch undisturbed across the water, lanterns flicker to life, and the mountain feels closer less spectacle, more presence.
We had the privilege of staying here for a week during our journey across Japan, long enough to witness the full arc of each day: the anticipation of morning arrivals, the vibrant midday energy, and the profound calm that follows sunset. This project captures that quiet transformation an exploration of contrast between movement and stillness, tourism and tranquility, spectacle and solitude set against the timeless backdrop of Mount Fuji.
