Duy Hai Fish Market, Hội An, Vietnam

Before the sun crests the horizon, Duy Hai is already alive.
Tucked along the Thu Bon River estuary on the outskirts of Hội An, this is where the catch comes in squid, snapper, shrimp, crab still gleaming and salt-wet, hauled off boats that have been working the South China Sea through the night. By 5 a.m. the concrete floor is a riot of colour and motion: fisherwomen in conical hats crouch over their baskets, buyers haggle in rapid-fire Vietnamese, motorbikes weave between ice chests, and the smell of the ocean hangs over everything.
What makes Duy Hai tick isn't spectacle it's rhythm. The same families have worked these stalls for generations. Transactions happen in seconds, built on years of trust. A nod, a price called out, a fish weighed by hand. It's a supply chain that feeds half the restaurants in the Old Town, running on reputation and routine rather than signage or formality.
By 7 a.m., it's almost over. The ice melts, the boats head back out, and the market dissolves as quickly as it appeared leaving behind only wet concrete and the faint trace of the sea. This project explores that window: the light, the labour, and the quiet intensity of a place most visitors to Hội An never see.
