“Between the Rush and the Smile”
Project type
street photos
Date
2026
Location
Hanoi Old Quarter
Set within the tangled streets of Hanoi Old Quarter, this photo project explores the beautiful contradiction at the heart of Hanoi a city that moves at full throttle, yet never loses its human warmth.
The Old Quarter is a choreography of motion: motorbikes weaving through impossibly narrow lanes, street vendors balancing baskets of fruit, steam rising from bowls of phở on plastic stools pressed tightly against the curb. Every inch feels occupied. Every second holds a story. The streets are crammed, layered, alive wires overhead, shop signs stacked vertically, conversations overlapping with the hum of engines.
And yet, within the rush, there are smiles.
A vendor pauses mid-transaction to laugh with a neighbor. A grandfather watches the chaos with calm familiarity. A shopkeeper gestures kindly toward the camera, curious rather than cautious. The friendliness of the locals transforms the density of the city into something welcoming. It’s this contrast speed and stillness, congestion and connection that makes Hanoi endlessly compelling to photograph.
This project captures the rhythm of daily life in the Old Quarter: candid encounters, fleeting gestures, and the poetry hidden within apparent disorder. It seeks to honour the people who power the city resilient, generous, and deeply rooted in tradition even as the city surges forward.
In Hanoi, the streets don’t just frame life they are life. And through the lens, the chaos reveals its harmony.
